ENGINEER CHARGED
ALLEGED VALUELESS CHEQUE COMMITTED FOR TRIAL A plea of not guilty was entered by Alexander Woods, motor engineer, aged 31, in the Police Court yesterday, when he was charged with obtaining money and goods from a city store to the value of £5 4s 6d on November 1, 1930, by a valueless cheque. Accused was represented by Mr. Noble. The credit manager of the store stated that accused had said he was on his honeymoon and had been in a great hurry to leave his business in Wellington. Accused said ho was a manufacturing confectioner in Lower Hutt. He tendered a cheque in payment for a small purchase, and received some change. Tho cheque, which was signed in the name of Alexander Woods, was later returned by the bank. A clerk of the Bank of New Zealand in Wellington gave evidence that accused opened an account in the name of George Cecil Horry in 1932, but there was no account in the name of Alexander Woods.
Detective Moore stated that he arrested accused on the arrival of the Monterey from Sydney on May 30. The magistrate, Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, committed accused to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was fixed at £IOO.
