CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION
AN. AUCKLAND COURT PROPOSAL TO SPEND £BOOO A proposal that steps should be taken to organise an Auckland Provincial Court at the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in Wellington in 1939-40 at an estimated cost of £BOOO was put before the Auckland City Council last night by the secretary of the Auckland Provincial Exhibition Committee. . The suggestion was that a space of 6000 square feet should be secured at a cost of £2500. To this, would have to be added the cost of preparing and transporting, the exhibits, the cost of erecting the court and the cost of attendance and publicity. It was estimated that approximately £BOOO would be necessary and it was suggested that each local authority would be expected to contribute 15s per 100 of population, plus £2l per £1,000,000 of gross capital value. Only half of this amount would be asked for in the current financial year, and the other half in the next financial year. It was stated that the committee had been advised that suitable legislation would be forthcoming to validate' expenditure of this nature on the part of local authorities. On the basis proposed the City Council would be required to contribute a total of £1908:
On the motion of the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, the proposal was referred to the Finance Committee for consideration and rr-port.
