HOUSING IN LONDON
LARGE BLOCKS OF FLATS SCHEME FOR 1,000,000 PEOPLE LONDON, May 31 Plans for slum clearance and rebuilding involve almost the whole of the East End of London and the rehousing of more than 1,000,000 people. Mr. Archie Michaelis, Victorian M.L.A., who is closely Btudying the question, informs the Sun that he has examined housing schemes from the St. Katherine's Dock and Stepney areas, also Hendon and elsewhere. The authorities, he states, are working out plans for the complete rehousing of the largest part of the population of Britain, extending over 30 years. Big blocks of flats are favoured in the case of those who need to live in congested areas near their work. Cottages are preferred in all areas where this is not the over-ruling consideration. It is generally agreed, he stated, that former slum dwellers kept their new places reasonably well and did not reproduce slum conditions in their new homes, though a certain amount of damage was done by children playing in small flats.
