FIGHTING CANCER
EFFECTIVE METHODS USE OF X-RAY AND RADIUM WORLD NOT READY FOR CURE [BY TELEGRAPH —I'RESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON. Wednesday " Food has nothing to do with the incidence of cancer," said Dr. J. A. Pollia, a cancer research specialist, of liOs Angeles, who arrived, to-day by the Wanganella from Sydney. He mado light of the suggestion that the New Zealand country diet of meat and strong tea was a contributory factor to the prevalence of cancer in the Dominion. Dr. Pollia said there were 30 or <lO known chemical agents, any of which was able to induce cancer, but its actual cause was as yet not known, nor was there yet any known cure for it.
"It is .possible there will not be until the human race is ready for one," he added. " When any disease becomes prevalent,, it usually runs unchecked through several generations until the race develops partial immunity and reacts favourably to a cure. It is doubtful whether the race is yet ready for a cancer cure."
The value of the work being done in New Zealand to combat cancer was high in proportion to the Dominion's place in the world, continued Dr. Pollia. He understood the study of cancer in New Zealand was mostly concerned with the treatment of the disease, which was tho practical aspect
