REMISSION OF RATES
MORTGAGE ADJUSTMENT
OBJECTION BY MEMBER
[bt telegraph—owx correspondent] ROTORUA, Wednesday - The action of some mortgage adjustment committees in wiping off arrears of rates, was the subject of criticism by Mr. H. P. Ford at the monthly meeting of the Rotorua County Council this morning. Mr. Ford submitted that the adjustment committees had no power to agree to wipe off outstanding rates of applicants for relief. Local bodies, he said, could do so only in cases of extreme hardship, and he considered that if the committees thought that hardship had been proved the correct course was for a recommendation to be made to the local body concerned, rather than that 4he committee itself should wipe off the debt. Local bodies were operating on definite principles laid down in an Act and he did not think that these principles should be overridden by an adjustment committee. If such action was taken in Rotorua, he thought that the council should immediately apply for a rehearing by the Appeal Court.
