TRANSPORT OF HORSES

STANDARD RATES FIXED FORMER DISPARITY REMOVED Following a mdeting arranged by the No. 1 Licensing Authority, Mr. E. <T. Phelan, standard-rates for the carriage of racehorses in the No/ 1 transport licensing district have been fixed. The meeting was held as the result of dissatisfaction of users and operators of horse floats over the disparity in the charges formerly in force. Representatives of horse transport firms, the railways and racehorse owners, breeders and trainers were present, and after Mr. Phelan- had set out the position in a statement a conference- of the parties was held and a complete agreement reached. A schedule of charges was approved by the authority and will be made a part of the licences already issued.

A minimum charg.i of £1 for tho use of a float was fixed and the schedule of charges for country meetings varies from £1 10s to £7 a horse. In the latter case this covers the distance from Auckland to Tauranga. The maximum rate from Hamilton "will be £4 10s. Where the journeys are not snecified in the schedule the charges will be Is 6d a mile for a three-horse float and 3s for a six-horse float.
