UNIVERSITY CHAIR
PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION PROPOSAL AT WELLINGTON IMPORTANCE OF SUBJECT [by telegraph OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Wednesday The movement which led to the decision of the council of Victoria University College, Wellington, to . institute a chair of public administration, the first set up at a university college in New Zealand, and to advertise for a professor and lecturer in the subject, is outlined in the first issue of the Journal of Public Administration, the organ of the New Zealand Institute of Public Administration.
"There has been a growing recognition among members of the institute that the importance of the subject of public administration, not only to the public servant but also to society as a whole, is so great that some provision should be made for formal instruction in our institutions of higher learning," the journal states. "Universities themselves have recognised that somo advance along this line is necessary, and in 1936 at a conference of the four university colleges it was decided to recommend to the Government that funds bo provided to Victoria University College to enable it to engage a staff qualified to teach subjects embraced within the term 'public administration.'
"Toward the end of last year the Government notified the Victoria University College Council that it had agreed to the proposal and was prepared to make funds available so that a professor and lecturer of public administration could be appointed. The council hopes to advertise for the necessary staff within a very short time and it is confidently expected that formal instruction in the subjects of public administration will Btart in the next academic year, 1939."
