GARMENT DISPLAY
COMFORT FOR ORPHANS CATHOLIC WOMEN'S LEAGUE A fine display of garments was made at the Catholic Women's League rooms yesterday afternoon. The collection was the result of the league's bi-annual garment appeal. There were contributions from Ruawai, Whangarei, Waiuku, Te Aroha, Alorrinsville, Matamata, Piropai and an especially large assortment from Dargaville. The town rr>e rubers and the sewing circle also sent good collections. The garments were all beautifully made and attractive as well as useful. There were some beautiful little knitted sets and a large variety of odd garments for the babies at the Home of Compassion. The children at St. Joseph's and St. Afary's Convents were also well catered for, all types undergarments being provided. The sewing circle had made, among other things, a number of dainty nightgowns, each one different and all hand-embroidered. For the beds th,ere were bright patchwork quilts and blankets, lined with wool. < ' Jt was obvious that much care had been put into the work to make the articles bright and attractive for the children. The result should be to make the atmosphere of the orphanage very homelike, each child having'some possession unlike the others.
The president, Mrs. AI. Pilling, thanked the contributors for their work, and also thanked the members who had participated in the recent street collection and the Alental Hospital appeal. Regrets were expressed for the departure of Aliss Al. Kerr, who had been a member of the council. Gratification was expressed at the opening of a new branch of the league at Alorrinsville. A sewing circle and a drama circle had already been formed in connection with this branch.
