CONVICTION OF PROMOTER HEAVY LOSS SUFFERED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Tuesday A fine of Is, without costs, was imposed by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day on Stewart John France, who was charged that, about April 14, he invited persons to make bets on the result o,f Rugby football matches plaj'ed at Wellington on April 17. This was the case in which a Judge allowed an appeal in the Supreme Court, ordering the case to be remitted to the magistrate, with the opinion that defendant should bo convicted. Counsel said that possibly the best safeguard against offences of this nature was the fate of this one. It cost defendant £27 13s 7d, and the total income was £4 6s. He submitted that in the circumstances the cost of the proceedings in Court would be sufficient penalty. The Crown no doubt would be satisfied to have the interpretation of the section of the Gaming Act under consideration.
