ORATORY CONTEST

THE BLED I SLOE MEDAL TO-NIGHT'S COMPETITION • The best public spealcerß among tlio sluclonts of the constituent colleges of tho University of New Zealand will bo present at the Auckland University Collego liali to-night, when tho third triennial oratorical contest for the medal award endowed in 1932 by Viscount Bledisloe will take place. The trophy is regarded as ono of the greatest distinctions that may bo gained by a New Zealand university student. .Tho president of the Now Zealand University Students' Association, Mr. A. P. Blair, will preside, and tho Rev. I<\ do Lisle and Messrs. J). Johns and J. W. Shaw will act as judges. Mr. W. 11. Cocker, president of Auckland University College, was to have participated in the judging, but he is at present absent from Auckland. The contest to-night will bo tlio first held in Auckland and it is_ not expected that another contest will he hold hero until 1953. The first winner of the modal was Mr. K. H. Melvin, of Auckland University College, and the second Miss C. Fordo, of Victoria University College. There will bo nine competitors on this occasion, each entrant being required, under the conditions of tho trust, to deliver a prepared oration on the life and work of some liotablo New Zealandor or on some outstanding event in New Zealand history. Tho entrants and the subjects with which each will deal are as follows: — Auckland.—Miss B. Cah ill, "Tho Sioge of Orakau"; Miss 11. Gorrie, "Now Zealand Goes to War." Masse.v. —Mr. JR. I). Bomford. "One of the Foundations of the Now Zealand Dairy Industry." Victoria. Mr. J. 15. Aimers, "Wireniu Tamihana"; Mr. Kingi Tahiwi, "To Rauparaha." Canterbury.—Mr. M Jormyn, "The Advent of the Labour Government"; Mr. J. Garrett, "Tho Life and Work of tho Botanist, Dr., L. Cockayne." Otago.—Mr. J. Meade, "Lord Rutherford of Nelson"; Mr. D. L. Wood, "Now Zealand Signs tho Treaty of Versailles."
