ARMISTICE DAY SILENCE I AN ADVERTISING FLIGHT [from our own correspondent] v ' LONDON, May 38 Because an airman flew with an advertising banner over Manchester and Salford during the service and silence on Armistice Day, 1937. Mr. Justice Atkinson yesterday released the advertisers from further liability under their contract and awarded thorn damages. .The decision was given in London in ah action recently, before Mr. Justice Atkinson at Manchester, in which the Aerial Advertising Company, of I'm-, mingham, Lincolnshire, claimed from Batchelor's Peas, Limited, of Sheffield, £l7O under a contract for aerial advertisements. Judgment was given for that sum in favour of tho plaintiff company, and for £.'300 on a counter-claim by the advertisers. who alleged negligence. Mr. Justice Atkinson observed:— "The Armistice Day silence is a time which most of tho people regard as tho most sacred of the year. One could well imagine the horror and indignation with which those thousands of people woro filled." *, Apologies, with the pilot's explanation— that ho had forgotten that, it was Armistice Day—were published in the press, added the Judge. A stay of execution was granted pending a possible appeal.
