GAOL FOR ASSAULT
INCIDENT ON SHIP A QUARTERMASTER STRUCK Pleas of not guilty were entered by John Quinn, a seaman, aged 28, in the Police Court yesterday to charges of drunkenuess, assaulting David Owen Jones and using obscene language. Mr. C. It. Orr Walker, S.M., was on the Bench* No evidence was offered on the third charge. David Owen Jones, quartermaster on the Doric Star, gave evidence that accused and a friend approached him about mid-day on" Monday when he was on duty at the gangway. Witness had received instructions not to allow anyone on board. Accused had previously caused trouble when he boarded the vessel to obtain food. Accused 6truck him on the face when refused admittance. Two other men from the vessel gave corroborative evidence, stating that accused had to be forcibly ejected. Sub-Inspector Flanagan stated that accused had been a burden on the ratepayers since he had been admitted to hospital following an injury in another assault caso. He was regarded by the police as an agitator on the waterfront and he would not leave the country. Accused was sentenced to oile month's imprisonment on the charges of drunkenness and assault, the terms to be concurrent. v
