' CANADIAN SUPPLIES POSITION IN AUSTRALIA SITUATION BECOMES ACUTE Because of long delays in steel deliveries from Australia, orders have been lodged in Canada for round reinforcing rods, and supplies of these are expected in Auckland at the end of this month. The acuteness of the scarcity through delays can be gauged from the fact that the Canadian market is being drawn on although its steel will cost approximately £2 10s a ton more to land than Australian. Canada is able to deliver at the port of shipment within three or four weeks from the receipt of the order. Except for three winter months, the Canadian mills deliver at Port Sydney, Nova Scotia. In the winter gionths, the shipping port is Louisberg. Merchants state that the Broken Hill Proprietary Company in Australia requires up to 40 weeks t<) deliver reinforcing rods and steel plates, although it advises that it expects to give normal deliveries after Christmas. The Port Kembla-works, which have been reorganised, entered into full production about a fortnight ago, and for such structural steel as girders, channels and small types of angles, delivery can now be made at the port of shipment within six to eight weeks from the receipt of the order.
