AUSTRALIA WINS

COLLAPSE OF ESSEX MARGIN OF 97 RUHS McCABE'S GOOD DISPLAY TBEACHEROUS WICKET By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright' LONDON, June 8 On a crumbling and treacherous wicket at Southend, Australia, beat Essex, after only two days' play, by; 97 runs. Both sides had completed an innings on Saturday, the visitors making 145, and the county 114. After luncheon to-day, in Australia's second innings, McCabo batted with assurance, even audacity; but the others were most unhappy, and soon succumbed. McCabo made 50 in 55 minutes. The innings closed for 153 after 165 minutes' play. Nichols at one stage had taken five for 19. He bowled with great zest throughout.

Essex required 185 to win when the county opened its second innings at 3.10 p.m. Eastman was out first ball.

"Wilcox and Pearce raised the total to 30 when the spin bowlers, Ward and Fleetwood-Smith, were called on. After • that, the Essex batsmen never looked like securing the necessary runs. Tha county batsmen were even more at §ea to the spin bowlers than the Australians had been to speed. The last six wickets fell for 30 runs in half an hour after tea, and the team was dismissed for 87 in 95 minutes: The cricket writer of the Australian Associated Press says the pitch provided nearly every vice of which wickets are capable. In these circumstances McCabe's innings, without which tha match might have been lost, earned the highest praise. Details of the scores are:AUSTRALIA First innings . . . . ... s<t »: • 145 .
