OPENING TO-DAY . THE RAUKAWA HANDICAP BETTING UNDER SINGLE POOL QUADROON STRONGLY FANCIED The single-pool system of betting will be used at the Otaki Maori Racine Club's meeting, which will be opened to-day and concluded on Monday. A Wellington exchange states that Good Sun, who accepted for the Raukawa Handicap, will not race at Otaki. Although Lazybones was scratched for the first day of the Dunedin meeting, ho has arrived at Wingatui and may start on the later days. According to an exchange, of the 175 race meetings, both "galloping and trotting, held this season to date, single pool betting has been used on 88 occasions and w.in-and-plaeo on 87. The Wellington Racing Club is submitting a remit to the annual meeting of tlie Racing Conference seeking to make it obligatory on owners to notify tho conference when horses registered as entires arc gelded. Mr. A. V. O'Brien - has been appointed to judge at the Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting at. New Plymouth on July HO and at the colnbined hunt clubs' two-day meeting at Now Plymouth in September. Mr. G.,D. Beatson litis given Mr. P. Griffiths a* three-vear-old filly by Tidal from Cetus to i-eplacd Cletrao, who died while exercising on the Awapuui tracks a few weeks ago. Cetus is the dam of Mercian Queen and The Grasper, being bv Joculator from Astorina, by Merry Moment. :!■ . ; . . :.j ■ Escaping from his paddock at Greenmeadows, Eil Vidette collided with a motor-cyclist on Tuesday and broke a leg, having to be destroyed. En Vidette was a six-year-old gelding by Hunting Song from Briyou arid when racing in the colours of Mr. A. F. Symes, showed fair form both in hunters' events and, hack company. .Mitigation, who appears in the Maiden Race at Otaki to-day, is a rising five-year-old. black gelding, halfbrother to Confiscation, being by Captain Bunsby from the . Nassau mare Lubrication, Snigger, the two-year-old ►filly by Laughing Prince—Bellina, and Cuddler. a three-vear-old brown colt by Tidal from Cuddle's sister, Squeeze,' are two others making their first appearance.
