Detours Advised on Rotorua Road

Although construction work is proceeding rapidly on the Rotorua highway, there are sections of road between Cambridge and Tirau on which progress is not sufficiently far forward for the surface to be entirely dependable under extremely bad weather conditions. In addition to the large volume of ordinary traffic, heavy-laden vehicles pass over this road. After one of these trucks had recently sunk through the metal provided for cars, there was a delay for a few hours when considerable inconvenience was experienced by those who followed. Naturally if heavy rain is falling when such incidents take place, the task of repair is rendered more difficult, and drivers on pleasure bent frequently prefer routes entailing longer mileage in order to avoid temporarily unpleasant conditions. The route via Morrinsville, Waitoa and Matamata provides a tar-sealed surface but, as this is over twentv miles longer, it does not find favour with drivers who desire to cover tho route from Hamilton to Rotorua in a reasonably short time.

In view of tho possibility of wet weather pending, the consolidation of new work in hand in the vicinity of Tirau, tho Automobile Association (Auckland), advises that there is a detour available which is approximately only throe miles longer than the main highway. From the Hamilton side, the detour turns along the Matamata and Tauranga route just beyond the Hora Hora junction and then follows eastwards toward the Okoroire railway station. A tar-sealed road extends from the railway station to Tirau. For motoristß travelling in the opposite direction, the Matamata road is followed from Tirau, and at the Okoroire railway station a turn to the left is made which connects with tho Tan-ranga-Hamilton highway.
