OBITUARY

DR. WILLIAM STROUD RANGE-FINDERS INVENTOR (Received May 2>), 0.45 p.m.) LONDON, May '2» The death is reported of Dr. William Stroud. He had founded his own firm owing to manufacturers' reluctanco to take up his range-finders. Dr. Stroud was chairman of Barr and Stroud, Limited, of Glasgow. With Professor Barr he invented a variety of range-finders for naval and military purposes" Ono typo designed for naval Use has been adopted by the Jiritish Admiralty, and is also extensively employed on foreign battleships and cruisers. Dr. Stroud was born at Bristol in February, 1860. He •was educated at Bristol Grammar School and at Oxford, Heidelberg and IWuerzburg Universities. Ho was a Doctor of Science. From 1885 to 1909 he was Cavendish Professor of Physics At Leeds University.
