HORSES FOR FOXTON PUROTO SHOWS FINE DASH QUADROON RETAINS HIS FORM POROTITI AND HIRANGI JUMP [by tkleghaph —own oqiibespondknt] PALMERSTON NORTH, Thursday On the course proper next to tho rails the final gallops of horses engaged at Foxton took placo this morning. The going was holding and cutting up. Sporting Gift, Skyfull and -the Now Plymouth pair Davistock and Bed Sand ran good half-miles, while tho two-year-old Selkirk put up the best figures for five furlongs. Puroto impressed over six furlongs in just beating Taillight, and Quadroon ran a solid seven furlongs. . . i All Blood, recently recommissioncu, sprinted up.the straight in 25 2-ss. Sporting Gift attracted attention by dashing over half a mile in 51 4-ss. He was greatly improved by his raco of last week. Skyfull was just ahead of Taitoa in 52. 3-ss, the first quarter in 275. former Foxton Cup Winner Davistock and Red Sand were travelling very smoothly at the end of their task, which occupied 52 4-ss, tho first two furlongs taking 26 3-ss. Davistock, who won the Foxton Cup two years ago and likes the track, is in better heart than he has been for some time. Merry Thought beat Cuisinicr in 555. The latter had previously shaped well in several runs from the barrier with Tliracos. Selkirk was going better than Old Bill in the concluding stages of their five furlongs to record 1.6 3-5, the first three in 39 4-ss. High Peer and Dainty Sue finished together in 1.6 4-5, Dainty Sue travelling well on tho outside. • Tho two-year-olds Titter and Snigger got to the end of five furlongs in J.B ]-5, while Cuddler easily covered the distance in 1.8 2-5. Puroto and Taillight fought out the finish of'their six furlongs, a length clear of Noisy Night, in tho good time of 1.19 14-5. The first threo furlongs were run in 39 2-ss, and the last five in 1.6 1-5. Puroto seemed to have tho better of the trial and is at the top of her form. Prediction comfortably recorded 1.21 4-5, the first half-inilo in 54 3-ss. Strong Seven Furlongs Quadroon jumped off at tho seven furlongs, being picked up at the six by Merryman. They went well all the way, for Quadroon to get to tho end of his first half-mile i,n 52 2-ss. He then began to gather in Merryman and was going well on the outside at the finish in 1.35. Merryman ran his six furlongs in i.20 4-5. Conveyer, Power Chief, Old Surrey and Eoyal Liinond, all of whom are well attuned, galloped soundly. Aurora's Love (Thomson) jumped the double brush twice, but she dipped a little at the final jump. Porotiti (Parkes) gave a fine display over three schooling hurdles, with plenty of pace. He promises to be a very fit horse for the Auckland meeting. Hirangi (Parkes) outjumped To Huia (Dowrick) at each of their four hurdles, the latter being inclined to rap his fences. Hirangi is gaining confidence and will be taken to the Groat Northern meeting. Sporting Song's Good Schooling

Kentucky Song (Thomson) and Sporting Song (Dowrick) jumped four hurdles. Sporting Song made the pace and jumped perfectly. Evidently he appreciates the easier track conditions. Kentucky Song jumped carefully. Taumau (Kowhai) took three hurdles in good style and should be in good form for the Otaki races. Warclii (Thomson) was in sour mood and gaAe a slovenly display over a round of tho schooling hurdles.

NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Further visiting candidates to arrive at Ellerslie include Forest Glow, Riotous and Windsor Lass. A trophy valued at £SO has been given anonymously for the winner of the next Winter Cup at Riecarton in August. Alma, who has been engaged for the distance races at the Dunedin meeting, and has been given top weight, 9.0, in tho Birthday Handicap, is stated to be well forward. Mr. James Bull, of Makaraka Station, Hunterville, has been elected a life member of the Marton Jockey Club. Appreciative reference was made to Mr. Bull's services as a steward and an owner. Potent is now a member of A. McMullan's team at Riccartoii, and will be given a course of schooling. A six-year-old gelding by I'otoa, Potent is built on the right lines to make a hurdler. The name of Mozeltov, 9.0, should be added to the acceptances for tho Whirokino Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at the Fox ton meeting, and that of Merry Ruler, 7.7, to the Himitangi Handicap. Miss Dorothy Paget's 15,000 guineas colt by Fairway from Golden Hair has been named Colonel Payne, after Miss Paget's great-uncle. Most members of tho Whitney family include Payne in their Christian names. The veteran steeplechaser Quinopal has been a follower of the Birchwood Hounds in recent weeks with a view to contesting the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at tho Dunedin meeting. In spite of his age Quinopal looks well. Araboa is reported to be galloping well at Wingatui and ho may be on the eve of a return to the good form he showed last season. A three-year-old half-sister, by Weathervnnc, to Araboa had her first gallopj assisted by Slayer, on Tuesday. The idly handled herself well. Aiwai was the medium of substantial support in tho Palmerston North Handicap at Awapuni on Saturday. She was the pacemaker to the straight entrance, but found the mile and a-quar-ter a little too far for her in her first essay over that distance in a handicap event. She may do better on the Foxton course.

A. S. McKay has Saltspray and Radius .Kod under his charge now. Another horse to be taken over by the Wingatui trainer this week is Drink Up. Saltspray has been entered for the Greenfield Hurdles on the last day of the Dunedin meeting and Radius Rod has been schooling well. Shirred Jlibbon was shipped this week to Hawke's Bay from Riccarton. As the stud season is a few months off and Shirred Ribbon is at present in good racing condition, she may be given more racing in the north before being retired to the stud. Sho will probably enter J. M. Cameron's stable. Four young horses in Dennis Dowling. a half-brother to Janet Gaynor, Pilot's Love and a half-brother to Pink Del were given a run down the straight at Wingatui on a recent morning. The first-named went off in front of his companions and came home on his own. The other threo were fairly well matched.
