SEATS RETAINED

MEMBERS OF COUNCILS REPRESENTATIVES OF OFT® DEFEATED CANDIDATES f AN INTERESTING POSITION ' 7 The defeat of a number of the former Labour members of the Auckland City Council has created an interesting position in connection with' bodies and institutions ito which the council appoints representatives. In every case the members have been api- 4 pointed for a definite term an<£ although no longer entitled to sit as members of the City Council, they have the right to continue to act as the council's representatives on other coun-i cils and boards for periods extending up to September, 1940. One of the important bodies on which the City Council has representatives ir the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council. In February, 1937, Messrs. A. Rosier, E. F. Andrews and N. V. Douglas were appointed to these positions, so that if they so desire they can retaii their seats until February of next! year, but if they should decide to resign the council has power to replace them.

Position in 1935 This recalls the position which arose in 1935, when the Labour Party gained a majority on the council for the first time. In February of that year Mr! G. W. Hutchison, who was then Mayor, and Messrs. S. Takle and H. P. Btfrton were appointed, but on the election of the Labour council in the following May Mr. Hutchison placed himself in the hands of the council and his appointment was unanimously The three members then continued to serve until February, 1937, when they were replaced by the present representatives. , ! • ' " The Citv Council has one tive on the Auckland University College Council. Mr. G. G. Grant was appointed to this position in Jane of last year and his term extends until June 30, 1939. There are two council representatives on the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board, the Hon. B. Mactin, M.L.C., and Mr. J. T. Jennings, and they can hold office until next month. They were- elected in May l , 1935, and the positions will again conle up for consideration at a special meeting of the council to be held in the first week of June. lli Other Bodies " j Other posts falling vacant in June of this year are the one seat on the Auckland District Council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, held by Miss E. Melville, a sitting member of the City Council, and the one seat on the Great South Road Beautifying Society, occupied by Mr. J. S. Stewartf. The council is represented on the Board of Managers of the Auckland Zoological Society bv Sir George Richardson, My. W. T. Anderton, MJ?., and Mr. G. G. Grant, but of these only Mr. Grant lost his seat on the council. • s The longest term of any of the appointments made by the council is that of the representative on the Board of Managers of the Elam School of Art. Mr. J. S. Stewart was chosen m September. 1937, and as the appointment is for three years he will not require to retire until September, 1940. The new City Council has not vet had an opportunity of discussing these appointments. -' - > - *
