RESERVE MEAT SUPPLY
LONDON REPORT DENIED NO JUSTIFICATION REVEALED REPLY MADE TO INQUIRIES [BT TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHEISTCRURCH, Thursday A vigorous denial has been given to a cable message received from London on Tuesday to the effect that the British Government would begin soon to purchase 250,000 tons of United Kingdom-grown meat to place in cold storage as a reserve supply. New Zealand meat producers, in view of this announcement, anticipated a rise in the price of their produce, but inquiries made in London by New Zealand meat exporting firms have revealed no justification for the report. The significance of such a purchase and the effect it would have on the demand for colonial production are evident when it is realised that 250.000 tons of meat is equal to about 9,000,000 carcases of mutton and lamb.
