CAMBRIDGE TROTS

PRINCIPAL EYENTS ] PROSPECTS OF CAVAN CHIEF BARON GRAND'S GOOD FORM BY ABAYDOS An average of 16 horses a race will parade at Clatidclands on Saturday lor the Cambridge Trotting Club's W inter Meeting. The field for the Cambridge Handicap is the smallest, with 11 acceptors, but capable of making a really fine contest. The 15 in the President's Handicap comprise many fine sprinters. Great Chum is the only horse in the Cambridge Handicap who has won at two miles, but Baron Grand and Sir Frank have been placed. Baron Grand has good credentials and when second to Bexlev Girl in the Cambridge Summer Handicap and second to Gay Sister in tho Thames Cup recorded 4.32 2-5.- He was not at his best at Awapuni or New Plymouth. Cavan Chief failed at Palmerston North over two miles, but his subsequent winning effort at Epsom at a mile and a-half suggests that tho journey will not be beyond him. He is likely to start favourite. Our Summer May Surprise Transwell has had three -firsts and a second in his last five starts. He has been running on in his races. Our Summer finished fourth in tho Turua Bracelet, two miles, at Thames — a sound effort. He has since won at New Plymouth and Hawera. Sir Frank, who has splendid form at a mile and a-half, has been twice placed at two miles. Lucky Love has yet to prove his staying ability, but his good condition will be in his favour. In spite of a 3.20 record, Chili Bean has been beaten several limes at tho extra half-mile. Levity has disappointed so often that he will not have many friends. Those likely to find most favour are Cavan Chief, Baron Grand and Transwell.

Chance for Sandusky Transwell is the pick of the frontmarkers in the President's Handicap, and, if he fails earlier, he will be difficult to beat at ten furlongs. The distance will suit Handicappcr, who is overdue for a win, and, a smart beginner, Hori Bingen may go well. Bismuth is regaining form, but Sandusky, on 12 yards, reads better. He is a seasoned tliree-year-okl, and while only once a winner, he has a long list of minor placings. He will bo very unlucky not to break the run and his chance nuj come on Saturday. Baron Grand, who sprints well, is nicely placed, while the distance will be suitable for Lucky Love. Chili Bean has attractive form up to a mile and a-lialf; Sir Frank also is likely to bo dangerous. One who will not lack support is the sturdy Royal Jewel, who won well in February. He is improving with ago and will bo running on when some are feeling the pinch. Great Chum is a sprinter of no mean order. Red Frontier is always likely to put up & run that will take checking. In a well-balanced field, fancies may include Sandusky, Transwell, Royal Jewel and Baron Grand.

NEWS FROM ALL SOURCES Bexlev Girl, who won fhe Cambridge Summer Handicap and was second to Red Frontier, in th? Rangitoto Handicap at Epsom, is likely to make lier reappearance atthe Wanganui meeting. She went amiss on tho eve of tho Thames fixture. Purina, who showed excellent form in winning at Awapuni, New Plymouth and Hawera, and went amiss on tho second day at Hawera, is engaged in the Foster Handicap, limit _ 3.0, at Wanganui on 48 yards. A win in tins class would put Purina in line for tho higher-grade sprint on the second day. At a recent trotting meeting at Seottsdale, Tasmania, Pendant, by Native King—Belle Logan, won a 2.30 class handicap from ( .)ft yards behind in 2.10, a Tasmanian record.
