£65,000 TO SPEND
WHALERS AT DURBAN RETURN ANTARCTIC [from oub own corkespoxdext] DURBAN, April 20 The 270 members of the crew of the Union Whaling Company's fleet, which has returned to Durban from the Ant arctic, are all" smiling and happy. Perhaps it was because they will receive between them £65,000 in wages. . The gunners in the catchers will receive from £I2OO to £ISOO each, while the able seamen and firemen will collect about £2OO each for the four months. "It might seem a lot," said one Norwegian gunner," "but that must last us until the end of the next season. The Norwegian members of the crew are entirely dependent on whaling and cannot do other work. The South Africans can now take on shore jobs until next season." Most of the crew grew beards, but only a few had faced Durban with them. On the night before arrival, razors and razor blades on board were at a premium. One blade shaved three men with beards two inches thick.
