HARRIER RACING

CALLIOPE CLUB ANNUAL HANDICAP EVENT OSBORNE CUP RELAY DECIDED Five teams contested the Calliope Harrier Club's annual handicap relay race for the Osborne Cup, held on Saturday afternoon. The fortunes of the race stimulated keen interest over tho 10 miles course from Devonport Wharf through Takapuna, via Glenfield to Zion Hill, Birkenhead. Change-over points were at St. Leonard's Road, Shakespeare Road and Glenfield Hall. Teams were drawn at the post as follows: A team ('2m 555): G. Ambler, J. Barrot. B. Short. W. Charnmn. B team (lm 555): A. Clow,' N. Shorter, Bailey. R. Dixon. C team (4m): M. White. D. Sharpe. F. Ilarman. V. Ushakoff. D team (scr): L. Lanigan, R. Burgess, N. Ambler, L. Dixon. E team (7ra 40s) i C. Arrol. F. Nicholson, E. McMillan, J. Power. Arrol ran well to keep a mile lead or M. White at St. Leonard's Road. G. Ambler made the remarkably good time of 14m ;>6s, second fastest to A.. Glow, who registered 14m lis for the last lap. 1" the second lap team's B and C had a thrilling duel, with D. Sharpe and N. Shorter making fastest and' second fastest time. Sharpe, with 16m 42s and Shorter, only a second slower, were next. The fastest time in the third lap, lim 435, was made by N. Ambler. Short s time, 16m 86s, was creditable. At Glenfield Hall the order of the teams was E. C, A. B and D. The last lap, however, showed the Bcratch team to have too much of a margin to make up, although they put up fastest time. V. B. Ushakoff (C) forged ahead of J, Power (E), and held his lead to win from W. Charman (A) by a quarter of a mile. TECHNICAL CLUB EIGHT MILES RUN HELD

The Technical College Old Boys' Harrier Club held a run on Saturday afternoon from the residence of Mr, J. Pratt, Maungakiekie Avenue, Green Lane. A good muster of members turned out. The course led across the fields at the back of Cornwall Park, and then over One Tree Hill, along .The Drive and into Campbell Road- From Royal Oak the trail led along tho main road back into Cornwall Park, thence home making a total distance of about eipht miles. ..... Members of the slow pack, controlled by C Dawson, all went well. Owing to missing tlio last strotch of run the intermediate pack, comprising Bradley, who was in charge. Diliner Mortimer and Gaeth. ran a good 10 .miles. Gaeth, unfortunately, sprained his ankle while taking a fence and had to retire. A. Harding lod tho fast pack and maintained good pace all the way. J. Watt, Ibbcrtson. Best and Tweedie all showed form.

PAPATOETOE CLUB The Papatoetoe Harrier Club held a trial run over an eight miles road course on Saturday afternoon. The slow pack, led by A. Martin, set a good pace all the way, and was not caught by the other pack until '2OO yards from the finish. N. Sly and H. Compton moved very freely in the fist pack, and both_ should soon be fit for the racing pack, while G. Sinton, a new member, should soon be able to hold the pace with the intermediate pack. A former Auckland and Wellington representative runner, S. Andrews, turned out after an absence of three years. D. Porter and R. French, were tho only starters in the racing pack, and both performed well. The result of the 150 yards run-in was as follows:—A. Potter (12yds), 1; N. Sly (Byds), 2; R. French (scr), 3.

LYNNDALE CLUB'S RUN A run was held by members of the Lynndale Club on Saturday from tho residenre of Mr. and Mrs. R. Price, 70 Surrey Crescent, Grey Lynn. The 50 runners present were sent away in five packs to Point Chevalier and back. In tho slow pack Stenberg, Grace and Darbyshire all ran well. The junior pack, ably led by Mr. Taylor, all finished smartly, Olson. Chant and Gallaher being prominent. J. Howells and J. Henderson, in the medium pack, and E. Taylor, It. Price and L. Munro, in tho fast pack, raced well for their first road run. Of the racing pack R. Crompton and J. Porrett finished strongly and are sure to be well to the fore in future events. AUCKLAND BAPTIST CLUB Ideal weather prevailed for the Baptist Harrier Club's run from the Richmond Baptist Church. A combined handicap run-in resulted: —• R. Hammond and I. Jsazo.v, deadheat, 1; H. Ferguson and AV. Ferguson, dead-heat 2. ELLERSLIE CLUB'S RUN The newly-formed Ellerslie Harrier Club held a race over the cross-country championship course on Saturday afternoon. The run resulted: —M. K. Baker, 1; J. F. Nicholson, 2. UNIVERSITY CLUB One of the best courses yet run over by members of the University Harrier Club was from Victoria Avenue, throne!) Orakei and Meadowhank districts, including road scoria and heavy, rough country. Lang, of (ho medium pack under the leadership of A. Thompson, ran home first, being closely followed by N. Stephenson and a promising new man Nelson. E. Stephenson ran well to lead home the fast pack, ably supported by do Lisle and Tweed ie. WESLEY CLUB'S EVENT A record attendance of IS runners was present at tho \Ves)c,v Harrier Club's run from the, Penrose Methodist Church. A trial of approximately 6Vi miles embraced a good deal of rough cross-country in the Penrose and Ellerslie districts. Results of the run-in were:— Fast.—W. Chappell 1; R. Skyrme. '2. Intermediate. —L. Moore, 1; H. Bray. 2; P. Crump, 3. Slow.—M. Lilland, 1; C'. Clark, 2; R. Reid. 3. Colts.—Nancekivcll, 1; Mewa, 2; Douglas, 3. PRESBYTERIAN CLUB A successful run was held by the Presbyterian Harrier Club from the residence cf Mrs. Paterson, St. Heliers Bay, on Saturday. .A trail of about five miles was followed by -JO runners divided into four packs. No runs-in were held. Runners who showed up well were L. Hack and J. Niel in the racing pack, while R. Crowe and W. Elder in the fast pack were also prominent. In the intermediate pack J. Mansill and K. Hancock ran up to form and in the novice pack K. McKenzio, R. Blamires and W. McKenzio did good work.
