EPSOM TRIALS

SOME SMART SPRINTS

STAR PRONTO DISPLAYS DASH

NOBLE PRINCE ALSO SHINES

BY ABAYDOS

The dirt track at Epsom provided good going yesterday, when all the work was done the reverse way round in view of the "YVaikato Trotting Club's meeting at Claudelands on Saturday. The best sprints were recorded by Star Pronto and Noble Prince, who registered 1.4 4-5 and 1.5 respectively. Luminate also-went impressively, to record 1.7 3-5, and Great Surprise went well for a maiden trotter by going 1.9. Star Pronto (B. Dyer) conceded Noble Prince (J. McKendrick) two seconds' start, and shaded him at the end of a mile nnd a-half in 3.25 4-5. Noble Prince, from it standing start, went the first mile in 2.23, when Star Pronto ranged alongside, and the speed was turned on. Noble Prince had Star Pronto extended, and was headed only in the last few strides. He ran 3.28. Noble Prince worked in his best style, and appears to be regaining form. If he continues improving, ho should be useful at the June meeting. Star

Pronto, who was on the outside, paced pleasingly.

Tommy McEUvyn (A. MoKenzie) was worked in saddle, and handled the conditions Well. He was not hurried in the early stages, but came home the last ttve furlongs at a 2.22 rate. Tommy McElwyn is making good progress. Wah Finishes Well Wall (S. M. August) nnd Bismuth (X. McGarry) went off together for a mile and a-half, but the former soon broke, and lost several lengths. Wah broke again after the first mile had been covered in 2.24, but recovered smartly, and finished soundly to beat Bismuth in 3.34. Bismuth, who took 3 36, was cased near the. end. Canadian (Laver) went two miles in 6.16, going at an even speed throughout. Ho is improving, and should perform well at Claudolands, whero he has two engagements on Saturday. Bingon Sun (W. Head) trotted a mile nnd a-half without mistake, the last mile and a-quarter at a 2.3o*rate, and the final half in 1.12. Over an extra quarter he recorded 35 2-ss. He lias brightened up, and is working with more vim.

Forest Jewel (L. Mitchell) led Sequoia (XV. Fleming) over a mile and a-half, covering the last mile in 2..31. Sequoia lost ground by boring out' on the turns. Forest Jewel, who scored her first success last month, is in great heart. Dick Redmond (A. T. Newdick) and Fisher (A. Paton), after going the first mile in 2.31, wore practically on terms at tho end of a mile and a-half in 3.41 1-5. Dick Redmond trotted more evenly. Fisher, who is very robust after a let-up, was tiring at the end. Argolis (S. M. August) covered two miles in 4.48, moving smartly over the first mile in 2.18 2-5, and a mile aad ahalf in 3.29. He showed plenty of dash over tho first ten furlongs. Luminate Goes Nicely Luminate (L. -J. Malioney) beat Sunny Parrish (T. Carlyon) and Jewel Crest (W. Willetts) over a mile . and ahalf in 3.27 3-5. Jewel Crest was handy to Luminate at the milo and a-quarter in 2.54, but could nob go with him at tho end. Luminate went generously, and showed a glimpse of his old form. For a novice, Jewel Crest did very well to reach the milo and a-quarter in 2.51 3-5, but the fast pace left him with nothing in reserve for the other two * furlongs. Sunny Parrish also shaped creditably to the mile and aquarter in 2.55 3-5. Stargum (W. Head), after going the first mile in 2.31 2-5, quickened the pace, to run the next two furlongs in 355. He is making steady advancement and finished full'of running. • Petite Jewel (J. Funnell) worked evenly over two miles in 4.48. He has brightened up with the two races he had at the Auckland meeting. Frank Best was let off with strong unhoppled Work. ,

Great Sonoma (L. Laver), after going a mile in 2.37, set off to trot a fast half, but marred the effort by going to a bad break. After settling down, he ran a quarter in 375. Two-mile Effort With Kewpie's Triumph (K. Boll) to assist over the first mile, and Kaitawa (W. Gee) to bring him home the second, Kewpie's Crest (W. Gee) went two miles in 4.45, the first mile and ahalf in 3.29, and the last half in 1.16. At the end of a lap v Kaitawa joined in, going a couple of lengths ahead of the others, and at the mile in 2.19 Kewpie's Triumph dropped out. Three furlongs from home. Kaitawa began to increase his lend, and he finished well in front, to run his last milo in 2.20. As a trial for his Hamilton engagement, Kewpie's Crest did not impress, but it is in his favour that he is a much better horse in a race than on the track. Kaitawa went in dashing style, and has only to repeat his track form to take of beating in his races.

Great Surprise (L. Laver) trotted the last of two miles in 2.25, going pleasingly over tho Inst half in 1.0. Ho made 110 mistakes, and for one with little experience gave an impressive display. Bedford (D. Smith) worked over two miles in 4.47, the first mile in 2.21 and tlie next half in 1.9. Bedford is working soundly. Our Princess (W. Willetts) covered a little more than a mile at a shade better than a 2.40 rnto. She run a quarter in 355, but was eased, and took 1.15 for the half. Our Princess is a shapely filly by Roy do Oro from Bingen Crest, dam of Jewel Crest. On the sand, Auto Machine, Autumn Lu, Worthy Quest, Lucky Love, Equipoise, Top Hand, Vanora and Pirate's Last were allotted useful work.
