KEEN RIVALRY

THE CITY AEEA LARGE LIST OF CANDIDATES I ! HEAVY POLLING EXPECTED ( ARRANGEMENTS FOR VOTING The keen interest being taken in the local body elections to be held to-day would seem to indicate that the poll ■" will be a record one. In the city not only .is the .electors' roll with its 68,339 names, the largest ever compiled, but the activities of the rival organisations sponsoring groups of candidates promise to result in more people casting their votes than ever before in Auckland. Tickets are also being run by Labour and various organisations of ratepayers in some of the suburban districts so that the elections will be i fought with equal keenness in these outer areas. Herald subscribers will be able to g n t progress results of the voting by ringing either of the two special tele- , 6 phone numbers provided for the occasion. These are 32-752 and 32-753. Information concerning the elections cannot be given over any other of the ; Herald telephones. During the evenI ing progress results will also be broad- ,* cast from the Herald buildings by ' Station IYA. Task Electors in the city area will be called T upon to choose a Mayor and 21 councillors, as well as five representatives ; on the Auckland Hospital Board and 1 four representatives on the Auckland ' Harbour Board. There is keen competition for all of these seats, the numbers ; of candidates being:—Mayoraltv-, 3; City Council, 52; Hospital Board, 13; ' Harbour Board, 11. Suburban repre- ; sentatives on the Hospital and Hari bour Boards will be elected at polls held in conjunction with those for member-

; ship of the various suburban localI bodies. I County council, roar] board and town I board elections 'will also be held to-day, • while the various constituent districts » will return members to the Waitemata [ Power Board.

1 Polling booths throughout the city I and suburbs will open at, nine o'clock <- this morning, and voting will be carI ried on until seven o'clock this evening. ; Counting the Votes I All arrangements . for the taking of • the poll in the city area were com- « pleted yesterday by the returning I officer, Mr. P. F. rfotley. Adequate J staffs have been provided for the 52 J polling places, a total of over 500 » deputy-returning officers and poll clerks \ having been engaged for duty through- « out the day. From 7 p.m., when the •| counting, of votes will commence, these « staffs will be augmented by a further I 332 men. By this means the prelinii- | nary, count should be dealt with - promptly.
