ABYSSINIAN IS&UE RESISTANCE BY CHIEFS STATEMENT BY SELASSIE PROBLEM FOR LEAGUE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON. May 8 ,On the eve of the League Council meeting, where Abyssinia will be one of the most difficult problems, Haile Selassie has published a lengthy document based on despatches from secret Abyssinian sources.
These despatches assert that the country is far from being conquered throughout the west, north and south-west. The greater part of Abyssinia. Haile Selassie states, is still under Abyssinian chiefs, and resistance at present is more intensive and effective than at any time since the autumn of 19.16. Mr. Vernon Bartlett, in the News Chronicle, ascribes to the Spanish and Abyssinian situations the unprecedented resentment against the British Government on the eve of the meeting of the League Council. At the meeting, he states, Spain may charge Britain with a breach of the Covenant in connection with the ItaloBritish Pact, as failing to terminate German, and Italian intervention.
