RADIO STATION

MUSICK MEMORIAL , ERECTION BY GOVERNMENT • USE FOR OTHER SERVICES 1 ■ ■ -iw;'! POLICE AND POWER BOARD ' The Government's definite intention to build a two-way radio communication station in Auckland, to be known as the Musick Memorial Station, was referred to by Mr. R. H. Bartley, general manager of the Auckland Electric-Power Board, at a meeting of the board yesterday. Mr. Bartley said a start would be made on the erection of the station when a decision had be'en reached concerning the New Zealand . air 'terminal for transoceanic) services, The proposal to erect a radio beacon in Auckland as a memorial to the crew of the Samoan Clipper was announced by the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, earlier this year. It is understood the station will provide communication. facilities not only for aircraft but" also, for police, ambulance and other « services. Explaining the effect of the Government's intention, Mr. Bartley said it had been suggested to him during investigations he had carried out in Wellington last week that the station would be available for use by the board in connection with its scheme to provide two-way radio communication for its service trucks engaged on repair work. In that case the board would not need to proceed with the erection of a central transmitting and receiving station, although the equipment would still have to be provided for mobile units. ' "As the board would not be called on to provide the -money necessary for' the erection and maintenance of the central station and equipment," said Mr. Bartley, "it would at present be in the board's interest to delay erection of a central station."
