VALUABLE AIR CARGO

GOLD SENT TO AUCKLAND CONSIGNMENT WORTH £SOOO Probably the most valuable cargo ever taken by air in New Zealand was handled recently by Uuion Airways. On one of the regular schedule flights from Dunedin to Auckland 15 pounds weight of gold in bullion was taken on board the morning air-liner at Christchurch and delivered at Auckland to the branch of the bank which consigned it. Because of the extreme heaviness of the metal, special arrangements to distribute the weight had to be made inside the aeroplane. Only a certain weight is allowed to be carried on each square foot of floor space and, as the gold exceeded this, boards had to be put in to spread it evenly. The gold, which came from the West Coast by rail, was delivered into the personal charge of the pilot by officials of the bank and taken delivery of by bank officers again on arrival at the aerodrome at Auckland. The value of the cargo was something more than £SOOO.
