NEEDS OP RAILWAYS " A HEAVY PROGRAMME MUCH WORK AT ADDINGTON [BT TELEGBAPH —OWN COBBESPONDEN'T] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday Information about tho heavy programme ,of i work ahead of the railway workshops at Addington was given by the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. The Minister said the staff employed at Addington was the largest that had ever been employed there, and the volume of urgent and essential work in hand was'stfbh as would necessitate an increase in personnel and extensions to the facilities and equipment. The staff employed at the workshops at present consisted of the following workers:—Tradesmen 567, semi and unskilled workers 477, apprentices 124, officers and clerical 68; total, 1236. Because of the universal delay in the supply of materials, there was a substantial carry-over of the 1937-1938 building programme, but the workshops were now proceeding with tho construction of first-class and day-sleeping cars, and also with the fabrication of detail parts of the "La" general good waggons and tbe "J" sheep waggon orders. With the arrival of the materials required, Mr. Sullivan continued, it was anticipated that workshops would be worked to their maximum capacity on tho following programme for at least the next two years; —Fifteen first-class cars, nine day-sleeping cars, 39 second-class cars, 30 brake vans, three four-wheel horsebox waggons, 47 cattle waggons,v 486 sheep waggons, 950 open "La" waggons, 32 "W" class insulated waggons, 120 "Xa" class produce waggons, six "Xb" class produce waggons, 20 "Yb" class hopper waggons, 30 "Üb" bogie flat top waggons, 20 "T7g" bogie horsebox waggons, 17 50ft. "Z M class covered goods- waggons, 20 "M" class low-side waggons, 20 "Q" class coal hopper waggons.
