ENGLISH SEASON OPENS FEATURES OF MATCHES EDRICH AND COMPTON SHINE LONDON. May 6 The outstanding features of the first series of matches in the county cricket competition were W. J. Edrich's second consecutive century—he hit one for M.C.C. against Yorkshire on Monday—and hundreds by two other younger players still, L. Hutton and D. Compton, who played for England against New Zealand last year. Ed rich topped the test averages <m the recent tour of India by Tennyson's M.C.C. side. H. Verity has soon struck form with the ball and he had a fine double against Cambridge University, which eleven the Australians will meet next Wednesday. Surrey: First innings, 67 (Smith four for 23, Stephenson six for 41); second, 460 (Squires 80, Gregory 130, Barling 129). Marylebone won by five runs. YORKSHIRE r. CAMBRIDGE Yorkshire: First innings, 540 (Hutton 180, Mitchell 100, Smailes 86). Cambridge University: First innings, 264 (Verity four for 49); follow-on, 171 (Verity seven for 39). Yorkshire won by an innings and 105 runs. HAMPSHIRE t. GLOUCESTERSHIRE Hampshire: First innings, 279 (Sinfield seven for 96); second, seven for 374, declared (Pothecary 118, Arnold 94). Gloucestershire: First innings, 271 (B. 0. Allen 97; Heath five for 74); second, 352 (Hammond 112, Wilson 90). Hampshire won by 30 runs. WORCESTERSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE Worcestershire: First innings, 342 (Martin 112); second, 143. Lancashire: First innings, 468 (Iddon 185); second, none for 19. Lancashire won by 10 wickets. SOMERSET v.
