GAS FOR AIRSHIPS

' GERMANY'S DIFFICULTY DR. ECKIENER VISITS AMERICA (Received May 8, 5.5 p.m.) , NEW YORK, May 7 Dr.. Hugo Eckener has arrived from Germany with the object of persuading- the United States Government to release a supply of helium gas for use in'airships.

Dr. Eckener hopes to cross the Atlantic in the new German airship on August 10, his 70th birthday.

The Secretary of the Interior, Mr. H. L. Ickes, stated , on April 21 that the United States would not permit the shipment of helium to Germany. The Btate Department and Army and Nary experts had established that the sale of such a quantity of gas as Germany required for her Zeppelin airships would constitute a supply of military importance. Since the disaster to the Hindenburg, Germany has desired to replace the hydrogen gas in the airships with helium, which is non-in-flammable.
