CIVIC LEAGUE

ANZAC DAY SERVICES SUGGESTED ALTERATIONS Some dissatisfaction with the conduct of the Anzac Day services was expressed at a meeting of the Auckland Civic League yesterday afternoon. Tho president, Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, said she had heard from a number of returned soldiers that they were indignant at tho fact that the morning service at the Town Hall had been dispensed with. It was agreed that the Returned Soldiers' Association should bo written to urging the association to reinstate the service. It was also decided to mako representation to the same body suggesting that the hymn "O God Our Help in Ages Past," known as tho soldiers' hymn, should begin the special service at the Cenotaph on Anzac Day instead of the "Old Hundredth." It was stated that the former hymn had been omitted on the past two Anzac Day services and the latter substituted, some disappointment having been expressed on this account by returned mcu, who regarded tho former hymn as specially their own. It was unanimously agreed that the Civic League should join in tho protest against the suggestion to erect an art gallery alongside the War Memorial Museum. The president pointed out that the museum owed part of its beauty to its unique surroundings and to erect another building in its vicinity would entirely spoil it. A letter was received from the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, thanking the league for tho expression of its appreciation of tho institution of a railway nursery and kindergarten in Wellington. He assurred the league that its suggestion that a similar establishment should be instituted in Auckland would receive his consideration.
