PASSENGER OVERBOARD
RESCUE ON DARK NIGHT GALE AND HEAVY RAIN [by telegbaph—own cobbespoxdent] DARGAVTLLE, Wednesday Good seamanship under difficult conditions played an important part in the rescue of a passenger who fell overboard from the steamer Ruawai into a raging sea in mid-harbour at a late hour on Monday evening while the ship was en route from Helensville to Dargaville. The passenger, when picked up, was no Worse for his experience. A wind reaching gale force was blowing at the time and torrential rain was falling. No one saw the passenger go overboard, but the master of the ship, Captain A. Sellars, was attracted by a sudden splash while between the Hukatere light and Dog Point. A few seconds later he heard a* man cry out from the darkness. The order.was given for the shopping of the ship and as it commenced to veer around a second cry was heard and a lifebuoy attached to a rope was flung into the water whero the voice had been heard a few seconds previously.
The buoy landed close to the man, who quickly grasped it, and he was hauled aboard.
