DOMINION SUCCESSES SEASON'S IMPOSING LIST j ■ MANY IMPORTANT STAKES WON BY PHAETON With the holding of the Australian Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting last month, the important flat-racing fixtures may be regarded as closed. Now Zealand was not represented so powerfully as in some previous seasons, but a fair number of important wins came to horses from the Dominion. , In the early stage of the season Mala's prospects were viewed as especially bright, but, although he won a couple of good races, he" faded away and it was deemed advisable to give him a rest. Sir Regent won the Metropolitan in game style and he made a good bid for victory in the Caulfield Cup, in which race he ran The Trump to half a neck at even weights. Subsequently the New Zealander developed temper and in two, instances he stuck up at the post in important events. Gold Rod showed himself up attractively when ho won the Epsom Handicap, in which he "carried . 9.3 and beat a large field, but his subsequent efforts were so disappointing as to lead to the impression that there is a weak spot in his constitution.

Egmont, who had been under a cloud for some time, managed to win the Bond Cup, but he failed to train on and it would seem as though little more can be expected from him in racing. .. Matters looked very bright for Elanage carrying his record further when he led the field home in the King's Plate at Fleniington in March. 111-luck befel him, for he struck himself in a training gallop and the injury was bo severe as to necessitate his withdrawal from all autumn engagements. Footmark, who won the West Australian Guineas and the West Australian Derby, was not raced in the autumn, but he is included with the rising four-year-olds likely to be seen to advantage next season. The following is a list of the important races won this season in Australia by New Zealand-bred horses:— Chelmsford Stakes.—Mala. Epsom Handicap.—Gold Rod. The Metropolitan.—Sir Regent.
