FAT STOCK SALES

WESTFIELI) iYAR DINGS SMALLEST FOR YEARS SHEEP AND CALF VALUES RISE The yarding at Westfield this week was the smallest for many years, the entries of sheep, lambs and calves being exceptionally low, largely because of interference with transport by floods in the North, as well as the incidence of eczema. As a consequence, demand for wethers and ewes was stimulated, and a sharp rise of us a head was recorded. There was also a remarkable advance in bidding for calves, prices exceeding last week's by more than £1 a head. Similar keenness in the market lor porkers raised values by 14s a head on recent rates. The offering of ox beef was of at'erage quality and, although prices did not. reach last week's level of £l6 10s, there was keen competition for well finished lines, bids being taken up to £l4 2s tid. For extra choice ox beef, the price remained for the seventh week in succession at .19s per 1001b. Quotations for choice and prime ox and choice cow and heifer remained firm on recent values. All lines in the very small entry of sheep sold easily at advanced prices, and, although there were no offerings of heavy prime sheep, bids up to 39s a head for wethers were taken. This rate represents a rise of 5s on recent quotations. Kwes sold up to 31s in comparison with 2!s at last sale. The exceptionally small penning of lambs was sold at fairly satisfactory prices. Prime lambs brought up to 2s a head more than last week's values, the best price being 29s 6d. There was again keen competition for prime vcalers, which were in short supply. A sharp rise in price resulted and bills reached £7 12s (3d a head, an advance of more than £.'{ 4s on last Week's highest quotation. Runners were sold to £•;. The feature of the pig section was the sharp increase in the price of porkers, which brought to 745, an advance of 14s on recent rates. Baconers remained firm at values ranging from (ißs to 935, the average per lib. being tijil. Porkers averaged from Gid to Old.
