ROBESON AS ATHLETE
Paul Robeson, the well-known singer, was one of the greatest of coloured athletes in his student days. At Rutgers University he won twelve university letters in four different sports, track and field, football, baseball, and basketball. Ho was a great javelin thrower, played end on the football eleven, was centre at basketball, and a member of the baseball nine. American football critics, like New Zealand writers, are fond of picking the greatest ever in various positions, and they rate Ilobeson as one of the best all-time ends in American football.
