INTOXICATION CHAHGES MEN FINED IN TWO CASES CANCELLATION OF LICENCES ANOTHER DENIES ALLEGATION Three men charged with .being found in a state of intoxication while in charge of motor-cars appeared in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. C. J?. Orr Walker, S.M. Two accused were fined and their licences were cancelled for two years, while the third accused was remanded. Felix John Fowler, aged 40, watersido worker (Mr. Robinson), pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car in Grafton Itond on Thursday. Sub-Inspector Fox stated that at 10.50 p.m. on Thursday, Constable Griffith saw accused's car make a complete circular turn in Grafton Road, run over the footpath and collide with a tree. The car was damaged considerably. Accused was found at the wheel, and at a subsequent medical examination, a certificate was given stating that ho was unfit to be in charge of a car. Mr. Robinson stated accused had been visiting friends and had consumed two bottles of beer. When turning the car he had been dazzled by the headlights of an approaching vehicle and to avoid a collision with a second car, he had been forced to mount the footpath. "He saw two cars, did he?" asked the magistrate. Accused was fined £4O and his driving lieenco was cancelled for two years. He was given two weeks in which to pay the fine, the magistrate advising him to sell his car. Collision Occurs Clyde William Roy Mcßae, aged 20, fire brigadesman, was charged with being in a state of intoxication in charge of a motor-car in Eden Terrace on Saturday. Mr. Moody appeared for accused, who entered a plea of guilty. Sub-Inspector Fox stated that at 6.20 p.m. on Saturday a car driven by Mr. Wise had stopped behind a stationary tramcar in Eden Terrace, when it was struck violently by n following car. Roth cars were damaged extensively and Mr. Wise was later treated at the Auckland Hospital. On the arrival of a constablo about 10 minutes later, accused was found at the" wheel of the second car, and a doctor later certi- j fied that ho was unfit to be in charge of a car. Shock o 1 Collision Mr. J foody stated that accused was not used to the effects of alcohol and the shock of the collision had made the effects appear worse. Counsel suggested that the magistrate should not make the fine too substantial as lie considered it was a milder case than the previous one. The magistrate imposed a fine of .£35 and costs, and cancelled accused's driving licence for two years. Accused was allowed a fortnight in which to pay the fine. A third man, Thomas Price, aged 39, concrete worker, pleaded not guilty to a charge of being in a state of intoxication in charge of a motor-car in Franklin Road on Saturday. He was remanded until to-day. A. Freeman. S.M., and his licence was cancelled for six months. Patrick Walter Pemberton, mechanic, of To Aroha, on a similar chargo was fined £lf> and his licence was cancelled for three months. H, Salmon, S.M,, for being intoxicated in charge of motor-cars. Reynolds' licence was cancelled for 12 months.
