OBITUARY
MR. R. V. SURTEES The death has occurred, at the ago of 85, of Mr. lliehard Villicrs Surtees at Stanford, Katikati. Mr. Surtees was tho eldest son of the late Rev. Richard Surtees, of Holtb.y Rectory, York, and of Dinsdale-on-Tees, Darlington, England. Educated at Malvern College and University College, Oxford, ho was a good athlete, winning many trophies, and representing Oxford against Cambridge in tho years 1875 and 1876. Mr. Surtees arrived in New Zealand by the ship Lady Jocelyn in July, 1878, taking up farming in tho Katikati district. Ho married Miss Emily Charlotte Sophia Stewart, eldest daughter of tho lato Mr. and Mrs. George Vesey Stewart, who were wellknown settlers of Katikati. With his wife and family Mr. Surtees left for England in 1886, but returned to farm the same land in October, 1904. Ho is survived by his wife, ono son and five daughters. MR. H. G. WEIR [by telegraph—own correspondent] TE KUITT, Monday A well-known farmer of tho Arapao district, Mr. Hugh Galbraitli Weir, died at his homo on Saturday. Mr, Weir, who was 64 years of ago, was the youngest son of tho lato Mr. Thomas Weir, a pioneer settlor of Mangapai, near Whangarei. In his youth, he was a skilled bushrnan in the northern district. In 1910 he bought a farm at Arapae, where ho had been postmaster for the past 25 years. He is survived by his wife, fivo daughter!! and two sons. MR. E. 0. JACK [by telegraph—press association] WELLINGTON, Monday Tlie death has occurred of Mr. Edward Collins Jack, aged 69, a wellknown company secretary and commercial agent, of Wellington. Mr. Jack held several secretarial positions at tho time of his death, including those of the Dominion Farmers' Institute and tho New Zealand Forestry League.
