MONTH'S INCREASE 520 3281 AWAITING PLACEMENT [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION'] WELLINGTON, Monday The latest unemployment return for the period ended April 9, 1938, was issued to-night by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong. The return, which includes those on the register who are for health and other reasons unfit for employment, discloses a reduction of 12.738, as against the corresponding figure for April 10, 1937. Compared with the position for the past month, however, there is an increase of 020 brought about by a falling off of seasonal employment. This small increase in registrations has been revealed in past returns and is to be expected during the winter months of the year. For the four-weekly period under review the. expenditure from the fund under the heading of promotion of employment as distinct from relief expenditure is estimated at £231,950.
