STATE PURCHASES
ROAD TRANSPORT LINES CHANGES IN TARANAKI FOUR COMPANIES CONCERNED [BY TJStEGBAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] PLYMOUTH, Sunday The largest motor transport service in New Zealand, which serves Taranaki extensively, will be taken over by the Railway Department to-morrow. No timetable or freight alterations are known. The Railway Department recently purchased the service, the Highways Transport Company Limited, which has its head office at Palmerston North. Three- other services, Hardy's Transport Limited, Wellington, the Cunningham Carrying Company, Limited, Wellington, and S. Wright and Company, Limited, Wanganui, also have been purchased, it is understood. Highways Transport Limited, serves Taranaki, Hawke's Bay and Wellington, its area extending over 660 miles of road. It has more than 40 vehicles, and last year they covered more than 1,000,000 miles. Hardy's Transport, Limited, also serves New Plymouth, while Wright and Company, Limited, serves part of Taranaki. It is not known when the three smaller eomj panies will be taken over by the Raili way Department.
