GLASS SMASHED

JEWELLER'S WINDOW BRICK IN PAPER USfcD MAN WITH CUT WKIST ADMISSION TO HOSPITAL A half-brick wrapped in a brownpaper bag was used late last night to smash the main display window of the jeweller's shop of Mr. Ernest McFeat, at 323 Karangahape Road, Newton. The window contained diamond and signet rings, watches and other jewellery valued at over £4OO, but as far as could be ascertained by a hasty examination of the scattered goods, nothing was missing after the window had been broken. Community lights were burning in the vicinity of the shop when the crash of broken glass attracted a neighbour and a passing motorist at 10.55 o'clock. A Gaping Hole

The motorist, Mr. V. Hoggard, of 15 Barrington Road, Grey Lynn, was on his way home when he heard the window broken, and on returning to the shop he saw a gaping hole in the glass. There was blood on the jagged glass, and also on the footpath. The owner of the shop, Mr. McFeat, eaid the window of the shop was not lighted from within, though the community lighting was burning at the time. The window contained a stock of jewellery, watches, clocks and silverware, which appeared to be intact, although a detailed stock-taking would be necessary before he could be sure that nothing was missing. The window was insured. Injuries to Man A middle-aged man, with his right wrist deeply cut, was found near the shop. A St. John ambulance and the police were called by telephone, and on the arrival of the ambulance officers it was found that arteries and sinews of the hand "were severed. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital in the ambulance, accompanied by a constable, and was later admitted to hospital.

The ljalf-brick, still in its paper wrapping, was found inside the broken window. It was removed by the police, and the window, after being cleared of the stock by Mr. McFeat, was boarded up for the night.
