CHESS CLUB OPENING
The opening of the 1938-39 season of the Auckland Chess Club was held in the club rooms on Saturday evening, when there was a good attendance of members and visitors. The president, Mr. R. E. Baeyertz, in declaring the season open, extended a welcome to the visitors and expressed- the wish that as many as possible would join the club and avail themselves of the club's facilities. Play took the form of a lightning tournament very capably conducted by Mr. F. R. Jeffreys. After some excellent games the winner proved to bo Mr. C. J. Taylor, who defeated Mr. C. B. Newick in the final.
