TWO-YEAR-OLD FORM EASY FOR ROYAL PAGEANT JOE LOUIS SCORES LUCKILY [by telegraph—own cobbespondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Saturday A better display at the fences, although it still had faults, enabled Southern Blood to beat Given at the finish of the Tipapakuku Steeplechase at Woodvillo to-day. They were always in front with Count Willonyx and after they had him beaten, they staged a great dual home. None of the others hau any chance and Red Sun ran off at the top brush with a little over 10 furlongs to go. He was fairly handy and appeared to be going well at the time. . , The favourites were routed in the Tiratu Maiden Plate. Brilliant Aero went with Shining Hours to the straight from Golden Enterprise, then Shining Hours drew ahead. However, Golden Enterprise had no difficulty in running her down and in winning comfortably. Shining Hours stopped badly at the' finish and did not have much to spare from Tom Tom, who came from the rear of the field. Showing his ability in heavy ground, Slippery won the Hartgill Handicap all the way, excepting that Old Surrey headed him for a couple of furlongs. The only horse who gave him any anxiety *at the finish was the favourite, Passion Fruit, who came with a strong run home, but he was too late to overhaul the winner. Old Surrey was a poor third, but his performance was creditable, as he was rushed up fast from rear to front five furlongs from home and this left him without a finishing effort. In addition to taking it out of himself, he gave Slippery a welcome turn as pacemaker and so' contributed to the hitter's victory. Royal Pageant proved much too good for his opponents in the Weber Juvenile Handicap. White Lady, led Royal Pageant and Lady Melfort to the straight, with Footloose handy. Once in line, Royal Pageant drew steadily clear and had a very easy win. Footloose finished better than Lady Melfort for second, with White Lady, Valiant Lady and Golden Melody next. Okawa justified her favouritism in the Totaranui Handicap, but an outsider in Lustra] caused her supporters some uneasiness with his late challenge. Gai Wind and Gay Hunting, who were the pacemakers, finished next.

Me a Mea made a wonderful effort under her big weight in the Glengarry Handicap and had she not been sent back to last on the turn she would have won. As.it was, only the incite could tell whether she or Joe Louis had secured the stake in a desperate finish. Happy Landing ran a solid race into third place. Bold Step was well beaten, after having every clianco.

Naughty Marietta was favourite for the Kaitohe Handicap, but she never flattered, the winner being Master Hector, who, after breaking through the tapes and going three furlongs, returned to pay the best price of the meeting. Warehi and Mahita made the early running from Master Hector and' Mahutai and they were still in that order when they turned for home. Master Hector stuck it out to win by nearlv a length from Lord Quick, with Warehi third, Skyfull fourth, then Mahutai, Naughty Marietta and Sardius. '
