AUCKLAND REVENUE GENERAL DECLINE SHOWN TOTALS FOR LAST MONTH Revenue collected by the Customs Department at Auckland last month was substantially below the total for April, 1937. Customs duty, tax on motor spirit, tyre duty and sales tax last month were all less than the amounts collected under tho various headings in the corresponding month last year, tho only item to show an increase being excise on beer. Totals for the first four months of this j-ear, however, are higher than those for the January-April period of 1937, with tho exception of tyre duty, which shows a slight decline. Customs revenue alone last month amounted to £259,420, against. £308,608 in April, 1937. With motorspirit tax at 6d a gallon and tyre duty added, tho respective totals were £330,641 and £380,755. Excise on beer amounted to £16,6(39, against £14,267 a year previously, and sales tax to £84,651, compared with £92,296. Four-Months Periods For the first four months of the year, customs revenue alone was £1,159,466, the figure for the corresponding period of 1937 being £1,136,732. With the addition of motorspirit tax and tyre duty, the fourmonthly totals for the two years were £1,459,995 and £1,409,972. Excise on beer produced £70,075, against £59,927, and the sales tax revenue for the two periods was £331,002 and £321,964 respectively. CHRISTCHURCH DECLINE BEER DUTY YIELDS MORE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday There was a substantial decrease in the amount of Customs revenue collected in April in Christchurch, compared with the same month of last year, but this is attributed to the late Easter. The only item to show an appreciable increase last month was the revenue from beer duty, which rose from £8759 to £11,196. The total for all Customs collected was £167,947, compared with £187,217 in April of last year. The figures are as follows, with those for April of lastyear in parentheses: —Customs, £92,020 (£108,703); beer duty, £11,195 (£8759); petrol tax, £25,581 (£27,050); tyre tax, £1383 (£688); sales tax £35,543 (£39,931); light dues £758 (£709); export levies on wool £440 (£552); miscellaneous, £59 (£6B). DT7NEDIN RETURNS FALL IN SALES TAX REVENUE [Br TELEGRAPH —FRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Sunday The returns issued by the Customs Department show a substantial increase in the beer duty collected during April, in comparison with the same period of last year. Approximately £2OOO extra was collected last month. The revenue from the petrol tax increased hi' about £llOO, while a reduction of nearly £3OOO was recorded in tho sales tax figures. The following are tho figures for April, with those for the same month of last year shown in parentheses:— Customs duty, £53,910 (£65,657); beer duty, £24,590 (£22,682); sales tax, £25.052 (£27,952); tyre tax, £502 (£579); petrol tax, £15,571 (£14,465); gold export duty, £llO6 (£1468).
