NATIONAL COUNCIL MEMBERS APPOINTED recreation facilities i OBJECT OP LEGISLATION The personnel of the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation, Appointed under legislation passed by Parliament last year, was announced on Saturday by the Minister of Internal Affairs, tho Hon. W. E. Parry. The council is to consist of the following members: —■ Official Representatives The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry (chairmnn). Mr. J. W. Heenan, Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs (deputy-chairman). Dr. M. H. Watt, Director-General of Health. Mr. N. T. Lambourne, Director of Education. An officer yet to be appointed by the Minister of Defence to represent tho Naval, Military and Air Forces. Sports Bodies' Representatives Dr. T. Harold Pettit, of Auckland, prominently associated with swimming, life-saving, fishing, shooting and other sports. Miss Agnes Kennedy, of Auckland, a member of the staff of the Teachers' Training College,, an official of the Auck- | land Y.W.C.A. and organiser of women's games. Mr. L. J. Brake, of Whangarei, president of the North Auckland Rugby Union and actively associated with swimming and trotting. Mr. W. H. Moyes, headmaster of New Plymouth High School and formerly a prominent athlete. Miss Kathleen McKenzie, of Napier, a keen physical oulturist, a former competitor in the Dominion swimming championships and a prominent member of the Girl Guide movement. Dr. C. E. Hercus, Dean of the Medical Faculty at Otago University. Mr. T. Meredith, of Invercargill, president of the New Zealand Rugby Union, chairman of the Southland Sports Trust and actively interested in bowls, cricket, wrestling, boxing and athletics. Mr. F. G. Dunn, of Christchurch, % former president of the Now Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. Mr. A. C. Kitto, of Wellington, president of the Wellington centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Mrs. R. S. Mclnnes. founder of tho New Zealand Girls' Basketball Association. Mr. C. F. Schadick, county engineer, Westport, who has represented Nelson and *Westland in football, hockey, cricket, tennis, golf and swimming. Mr. M.' H. Wilks, public accountant, of Taumarunui. Two Additional Members The Act passed last year provided for the appointment of 10 unofficial members of the council. In the list now announced there are 12 names and the Minister stated that he proposed to ask Parliament to agree to the appointment of the two additional members. Discussing the duties of the council, Mr Parrv said there was work of great importance ahead. He was sure the members appointed would have the confidence of the public, the sports bodies and all those actively engaged in sport and recreation. He was only sorrr that he had been unable to appoint all the highly qualified individuals whose services were offering. Survey oi Requirements In the near future, said the Minister, district committees would be set up to co-operate with the National Council and in this respect full consideration, would be given to the needs of ™untry districts. The most important phase of the earlv work of the National Council would be a survey of the recreational and sporting requirements of the dominion. The council wnuld act in an advisorv capacity and its recommendations regarding facilities for physical welfare and recreation would be brought before the Government. "Changed conditions of have brought about a new leisure Mr. Parrv said, "and the object of the legislation under which the counci will act is to see that recreational facilities are provided so that increased leisure may result in a higher standard of physical welfare.
