FRANCO'S SUCCESS OFFENSIVE IN TERUEL AREA REPUBLICAN LINES CRUMPLE MUCH TERRITORY OCCUPIED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received April 27, 11.50 p.m.) Times Cable LONDON, April 27 As the result of a surprise offensive on the Teruel front in Eastern Spain, nearly 300 square miles of mountain territory have been occupied by the rebels, says a Burgos communique. A single shot rang out at 8 a.m. on Saturday as the signal for hundreds of guns to go into action. Eighty aeroplanes co-operated. The Republicans' lines crumpled on a wide front. General Franco again demonstrated that lie possesses sufficient resources to concentrate a superior force almost anywhere, saj's the Saragossa correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. After thorough and secret preparations, the Castilians have broken the Government lines in three places and advanced a depth of 13 miles. Government reserves were rushed up but failed to stem the advance.
General Aranda's troops, aided by a rebel naval squadron, captured La Torret;i and Punta Velada on the Mediterranean coast says a message from Burgos.
