FAVOURITES FAIL

ONLY ONE RUNS PLACED AIRAM'S solid dividend MILANION ALSO AT GOOD ODDS SURELLA DEFEATS SPRINTERS Every favourite was beaten on the lecond day of tho Avondalo Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting yesterday and the only one to gain a place Mas Valamito, who finished third in tho Autumn Handicap. However, tho dividends were not as large as on the first day, although Airam and Milanion both paid double figures. Airam's victory in the Autumn Handicap was a meritorious effort, as she did not receive tho best . of the start and was not well placed . early. The lightwoigst Surella scored narrowly in a fine finish in the open sprint, the -Mount Eden Handicap. Tho weather was gloriously fine and there was a largo attendance. Tho track had dried a good deal since Saturday, although it was still soft and cut up as the day progressed. The totalisator handled £30,811 10s, com- - pa led with i.*i,o2b 10s on tho second •day last, year, an increase of £3783. , The investments for the meeting amounted to £60,270, against £64,865 10s last year, an increase of £409 10s. Over the first hurdle the order was High Star, Swift Spear, My Money and Kilberis. Passing the stand My Money, High Star and Swift Spear were in order, followed by Kilberis, All Irish and then a gap to Valpai and Golden Spahi. Along tho back High Star was two lengths in front of My Money and Kilberis, with All Irish moving up on the outside. Crossing the top, High Star was closely followed by Kilberis, All Irish and My Money, who were well clear of the others. Turning into the straight All Irish moved up to High Star and these two jumped the last two fences together, for All Irish to finish the better and score easily by "" three . lengths from High Star, with Kilberis two and a-half lengths away third. The first to show out were Australian Star, Fleur d'Or, Bonnybello and British Nation, Carmelia being badly away. The leaders along the back were Bonny belle, British Nation, Sen Acre, General Biske and Superior Guard. As they crossed tho tpp, Superior Guard moved up to be the leader, closely followed by General Riske, Bright Idea and Love Parade. There was no change as they entered the straight and Superior Guard drew out in the run home to win by three lengths'from Hessketoon, who finished strongly on the rails. Cintrace came home well into third place, a short neck away. King Silver was fourth, followed, by Broadway Bill and British Nation, Time, lm 16 4-ss.

The first to become prominent were Llangollen, Day \\ irul, Gay Rose ana Prince Rangi. Gay Hussar received tho worst of the start, the first to show out being Pocket Venus from Valimecn, Noitaro, Bronze Emerald, Philcourt and Vitement. After a furlong had been covered, Pocket Venus and Valimeen were showing tho way to Noitaro and Philcourt, together. Golden Sheila and Prince Acre were the first to show out, but crossing tho top Galilee was in charge from Tonnerro, Anion, Palustre, Prince Acre and Pace Call. Entering the straight, Tonnerro and Palustre were the leaders, two lengths ahead of Pace Call, Galilee, Prince Acre,' Anion and Surella. Half-way down the straight Tonnerre drew clear, but Surella put in a good run, to head him insido the last half a furlong. Rulctte then appeared on the scene, and in a great finish Surella gained the decision by a head from Rulctte, with Tonnerre a similar distance away third. After straightening up Gold Vaals went to the front and, drawing right away, scored easing up by four lengths from Day Wind, who just held on to beat the fastfinishing Kena by half a length. MR. STANDFAST WINNER VICTORY AT THE CURRAGH Cabled advice has been received hy Mr. M. H. Tims that tho first starter by Mr. Standfast was a winner at The Curragh, Ireland, recently. Mr. Standfast, who is a half-brother, by Buchan, to I3eau Pcre, was recently imported to New Zealand by a syndicate headed by Mr. Tims, and his stud career in the Dominion will be followed with interest, especially after the success that has been achieved by the progeny of Bean Pcre.
