WINTRY WEATHER

AUCKLAND CONDITIONS COLD AND SQUALLY SOME TROUBLE ON ROADS Cold and squally conditions, with heavy falls of rain in various parts of the province, -which caused slips and other troubles on many roads, marked the week-end. Road traffic was held up in several places. Strong south-west winds, changing later to southerly, brought up the rain squalls in and around Auckland, conditions being wintry. The maximum temperature of 70 degrees was the lowest maximum registered this year, though the minimum temperature of 60 degrees was not the lowest. About an inch of rain fell in Auckland in the period.

Rain started to fall on Saturday afternoon, but Sunday morning was fine and warm, and bathing proved popular. However, by. 3 p.m. heavy rain fell again, lasting throughout the day. There were cold squalls yesterday, the day being much colder than on Saturday and Sunday, the minimum temperature of -60 degrees being recorded at 5 p.m. Yachtsmen experienced difficulties in yesterday's squalls, two craft being upset in Rangitoto Channel. In Auckland the rainfall for 24 hours ended at midnight on Saturday was ,57in. For the 24 hours ended at midnight on Sunday .04in. was recorded by the Herat,d's gauge, but in some parts of the city and suburbs the rain was very heary. For 24 hours up to midnight last night the fall was .43in.

Several inches of rain fell over the three days in the Waitakeres, but farther north showers were not heavy and no road troubles were reported. The rainfall at Hamilton was not heavy and the district appeared to have missed the storm that visited other parts of the North Island. The Taupo-Tirau highway was blocked by slips between Atiamuri and Tokoroa. Small slips occurred on the Mamaku Hills, but did not interfere with traffic. A minor blockage caused by a slip in the'Waimana Gorge on the WhakataneOpotiki Road stopped traffic for some time yesterday morning, but this was cleared. The Kaintai Road to Tauranga was not fit for motor traffic during the week-end, as a bridge which collapsed last week had not been repaired.
