FINAL YACHT RACES

CLOSE OF SEASON COMBINED EVENTS HARBOUR AND CRUISING EIGHT CLUBS PARTICIPATE SIX WINS FOR MACUSHLA The yachting season in Auckland was officially brought to a close on Saturday afternoon, when a series of combined harbour and cruising races was held under the control of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-boat Association. All classes, from the A keel yachts of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron to the 12ft. 6in. Z boats of tho Takapuna Boating Club, were represented. In addition a race for naral service whalers was held. A light easterly breoze with steady rain prevailed in the early part of tho afternoon. Later the wind freshened and shifted to tho south-east, enabling tho boats to finish before dusk. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron held a general handicap for keel yachts to Awaroa Bay, Waiheke, and a harbour race for M class. All the other clubs held combined harbour and cruising race?. The destination of the cruising event, which was for keel yachts and mullet boats.) was Islington Bay., All races were started from the tower on the end of King's Wharf. The naval sailing whalers were sont away first at 1.45 p.m., the squadron keel yachts at 2.20 p.m. and the remainder at five minutes intervals. The most successful boat was the 22-footer Macushla, which won six first prizes. The 26-footer Arawa and tho 16-footer Annette each accounted for four first prize 3. HARBOUR RACES In the race for M class Maranita was first away and was closely followed by Mercedes, Mijwhiti, Manu, Manaia, Maroro, Manoa and Manene. Mawhiti went into the lead on the beat to the Sandspit and on the completion of the first round was 16 seconds ahead of Manu, which was five seconds in front of Manaia, with Maroro lm 12s further away. In the second round Mawhiti. which had trouble with her spinnaker, was passed by Manu and Manaia. The race started at 3.2 p.m. The finishing times were:—Manu, 4h 24m 28s; Manaia. 4h 25m 345; Mawhiti, 4h 26m 40s; Manoa, 4h 26m 41s; Manene, 4h \2Bm Ss; Maroro, 4h 2Sm 225; Maranita. 4h 20m 495. Mercedes retired. . Eleven boats faced the starter in the race for class V and when the last flan fell Limerick crossed the line just ahead of Surprise, Paroro, Vaalele. Irina and Riptide with the others handy. Awanui crossed too soon and was ordered to return. Irina soon established a good lead, which she maintained on both rounds of the course. The race started at" 3.10 p.m. The finishing times were: —Irina, 4h 25m 15s; Vaalele, 4h 30m ss; Limerick, 4h 30m 275; Surprise, 4h 30m 51s; Riptide, 4h 31m 10s; Memutu, 4h 31m 13s; Manaru, 4h 31m 535; Faroro, 4h 32m 30s; Velox, 4h 33m 15s; Leverette, 4h 37m 31s; Malolo, 4h 3Sm 4s. Awanui retired. . „ . There were seven competitors in the raco lor class S. Marlene was first away and was closely followed by Sirona, Mahana, Annette. Sceptre and Irene. Sonoma crossed before gunfire and lost iy 3 m in recrossing. Mahana led on both rounds of the course with Annette holding second position. FOURTEEN-FOOT CLASSES Vamp showed the way over the line in ♦ho race for class T and close on her steru followed Lena, Salome, Sybila, treasure, Edna D. and Invader. Vamp held her advantage on both rounds of the course. There were 30 competitors in the race for class Z and the skippers were so anxious to get away that about half of the fleet was over the line before gunfire, and the starter kept the last flag up until they all returned. The start was a very pretty one, all the boats crossing the line within a few seconds of ono another. Cheerio was first to show out, with Tanya, Ranee, Tere, Kupe, Gipsy, Lyla, Billy Boy and Tinopai next in order. NAVAL SERVICE WHALERS Five naval service whalers started at 1.45 p.m. in the race for their class. The finishing times were: —H.M.S. Leith whaler 70K2, 4h 5m 595, 1; H.M.S. Philomel whaler 28K2, 4h 17m 17s, 2; R.N.V.R. whaler No. 1, 4h 25m 295, 3; Artillery 13t'n Battery No. 1 whaler, 4h 26m 6s, 4. H.M.S. Philomel whaler 28K1 retired. CRUISING RACES The keel yachts of the Royal Akarana Yacht Club competed in a general handicap, and were sent away to a good start. Rainbow cmsscd the line at gunfire, and close on her stern came Queenie, Maybclle, Corsair, Speedwell, Pandora ard Valdora in that order. Owhanga was 3m late. Rainbow soon improved her position, and finished a long way ahead of the other boats. The race started at 2.30 p.m. Tho finishing times were:—Rainbow, 3h 42m 38s; Queenio, 3h 51m 3 8s; Owhanga, 3lr 58m 455; Speedwell, 3h 59m; Maybellc. 4h lm 555; Corsair, 4h 5m 20s; Pandora, 4h Sm 50s: Valdora, 4h 26m 445. In the race for 26-footcrs, Starlight showed the way over the line and less than a length away came Corona and Bluestreak, with Spray, Nyra and Arasva following in that order. Corona took the lead on the beat down tho harbour and was first home. The race started at 2.38 p.m. The finishing times were:—Corona, 3h 51m 40s; Starlight, 3h 58m 2s; Arawa, 4h 31s; Spray, 111 3m 355; Bluestreak, 4h 4m Is; Nyria, 4h 11m 2s. The bo.tts in classes L and N, which race together, made a good showing as they stood lor the line. Rahiri was first away, and was closely followed by Winifred, Macushla, Tamariki, Vamarie and Marika, with the rest handy. Sailing exceptionally well on the beat down the harbour, Macushla went into the lead, and not only beat all in her class "in," but also several H class boats which had started 8m earlier.

The start of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's race for keol yachts to Awaroa Bay was an excellent one. There were 22 competitors and at gunfire Ngatoa crossed the line at the head of the fleet. Tamatea was second away and then followed Tawera, Waiomo. Waione and Viking, all within a few seconds of ono another. Next came Medina. Mahaki, Windward, lorangi, Kottiku,. Rarere. Moana. Tainui, Ariki, Little Jim, Tawhiri, Waitangi. Minerva, Janet, Tangaroa and Revel. The last-named was 2Vim late. Tangaroa crossed the line before gunfire and jvas ordered to return. Ngatoa held tho advantage gained at the start and was first home.

EVENTS ON MANUKAU COMBINED HARBOUR RACES The yachting season on the Manukau was closed with combined harbour races, boats of both the Manukau Yacht and Motor-Boat and Manukau Cruising Clubs competing. Conditions were not too favourable, a light easterly breeze, which later fell away, causing several of the yachts to retire during the race. Twenty-one yachts were sent away to a good start, in which Sunbeam crossed first, followed by Perseus, Mere, Shirley and Aileen, with the others bunched. Aileen led at tho first mark, but on the run out to the mark off Waikowhai Mere took tho lead, a position which she maintained on the beat back. Mystery, Opah, which was well handled, Ranui and Mistral were the nearest boats as they completed the first round. With the breeze falling away Mystery took the lead on the beat back to the finishing lino, with Mistral in second position. The race started at 2.45 p.m. The finishing times were:—Mystery, 5h 20m 18s; Mistral, 5h 21m lis; Opah, 5h 23m 2s; Aloma, 5h 25m 445; Shirley, 5h 26m 275; Mere, 5h 27in 58s; Aileen, oh 33m 51s; Ranui, 5h 34m 15s; Wixie M., 5h 34m 555; Topsy, 5h 55m 15s.
