OUTPUT OF GOLD
EXPANSION IN AUSTRALIA INCREASE OF 15 PER CENT An increase of 15 per centr in the amount of gold produced in Australia during February, compared with the figures for the same month last year, is reported in a message from Canberra. The total production in February was 126,645 fine ounces, valued at £1,092,446. Gold production figures made available by the Commonwealth statistician, Dr. 11. Wilson, reflect the continued expansion of the gold yield. The output for the two months ended February, of 239,525 fine ox., was approximately 36,0000z. higher than the yield for the corresponding two months of last year. Western Australia headed the production figures for February, the yield being 97,537 fine oz., compared with I 79,443 fine oz. in February, 1937. Victoria, with an output of 10,826 fine 07,. in February» against 13,554 fine ox. in February, 1937, filled second place to Queensland, where 10,643 fine ox. w?re produced, compared with 10,285 fine ox. in February last year. GOLD AND SILVER QUOTATIONS IN LONDON LONDON, April 23 Fine gold is quoted to-day at £'6 19s 7d an oz., compared with £6 19s 6d yesterday and on Thursday. Silver is quoted at 18 15-16 d an oz. spot and 18j[d forjvard, compared with ]8 13-16 d and 18£ d yesterday. The quotation for silver at per fine oz. j'esterday was 20 5-16(1, same as on April 21.
